The recent resurgence of the forestry industry is set to continue as timber prices soar, woodland properties sell at impressive margins over asking prices and the industry finally gains recognition as the provider of truly sustainable resources. Sensitive woodland management offers a multitude of other benefits such as tax efficient investment, sustainable timber supplies, habitat creation, landscape enhancement, wood-fuel energy, carbon sequestration and excellent sporting opportunities, not to mention an increase in the capital value of the Estate. The world is changing and Climate, Sustainability and Renewables, are now Government priorities. The new Rural Development Contracts Scheme, due to be launched early in 2008 will offer grants for the creation of woodlands to help achieve these priority targets. Timber is a renewable resource and it’s procurement in ‘New Builds’ is on the increase. The UK Government has developed a timber procurement policy which requires central government to ‘actively seek to buy timber from legal and sustainable sources. Local government is encouraged to comply’. In addition, private companies are now actively supporting forestry establishment throughout the UK in order to demonstrate their “green” credentials. Carbon sequestration is the prime motivator, however the Atlantic Salmon is also set to benefit as landowners realise the potential of sensitive woodland establishment in river catchments. Well planned and designed woodlands are an asset and there is no time like the present to review your Estate’s policy regarding forestry. Do you own woodland? Are you managing it to optimise it’s potential? Are you considering a Forestry investment? Now is the time to explore your options and take advantage of the rewards woodland ownership brings.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of woodland management, acquisition or valuation please contact Emma Walters on 01463 245382 or email emma.walters@ckdgalbraith.co.uk who will be able to put you in touch with the Forester for your area. |
